The year 2006 produced a new, innovative group of Paramedics and EMTs that travel on bicycles.  At this time TSFR has 12 Paramedics and EMTs participating in this program.  During holidays and festivals in the City, our bicycle teams find it much easier to get through crowds to someone needing the help.

The bicycles are fully equipped with all the equipment such as oxygen, cardiac medications, first-aid supplies and much more which would be needed for the treatment of most anything that could happen.

Food Basket Program

Each year, with sirens and horns and a brilliance of lights, Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue firefighters and Santa visit neighborhoods in the City for a few evenings before Christmas.  The children of Tarpon Springs are thrilled at the magical sight and a greeting of "Merry Christmas".

Each year Tarpon Springs Firefighters hold an annual food drive for those families in the City who may need some extra help over the holidays.  Food baskets are made up of donations of non-perishable foods, turkeys, and all the trimmings. And in the past couple of years, there have been numerous businesses/club houses (etc.) that have allowed us to place food donation boxes and have collected a vast amount of non-perishable food.

This program has been in effect for over 15 years and the firefighters have handed out approximately 125 food baskets yearly.

On the eve of the yearly Christmas parade firefighters, with the help from the North Pinellas Explorers, put the boxes of food together.  Right after the Christmas parade, they deliver the boxes to those who cannot come and pick them up at the station on Huey Avenue.  Most people come to the station to pick up their baskets, which is a great help to the firefighters.

Child Passenger Safety

Tens of thousands of individuals have been certified as Child Passenger Safety Technicians and Instructors since the standardized curriculum and certification program began in 1997. CPS Technicians and Instructors put their knowledge to work through a variety of activities, including child safety seat checks where parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.

National certification of these individuals helps to enhance the credibility and professionalism of all child passenger safety advocates and practitioners, the child passenger safety community, and the organizations and programs that use the services of certified CPS Technicians. Documented CPS training and experience may also help to reduce liability.  Click for more information.

Smoke Detector Program

Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue has an aggressive smoke detector program available to the citizens of Tarpon Springs.  If you cannot afford a smoke detector, come to the Public Safety Building at 444 Huey Ave So., and you can get a free smoke detector for your home.

If you are unable to install the detector, firefighters are available to come to your home to install it for you. There is no charge for this service.

Fire personnel also conduct a door-to-door program visiting and testing residential smoke detectors.  Thousands of homes have been visited so far, where hundreds of new smoke detectors and thousands of batteries have been installed. These are furnished by Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue.

In the last 3 years, every subdivision has been visited.

Florida Safe Pools.com is a water safety campaign established by Florida Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition led by All Children's Hospital. The Coalition's mission is to prevent the accidental injury of children and consists of child advocates from every sector of the community: education, law enforcement, fire/rescue, private industry, public health, health care, social services, parents and volunteer service groups. The Coalition addresses the greatest injury risk areas for children 0 - 14 years: motor vehicle injury, bicycle and pedestrian injury, drowning, and other injuries in the home, school and community.

Because Florida leads the nation in drowning deaths for children under 5 years old, members of the Suncoast Safe Kids Pinellas Council with the support of a Florida Department of Health Bureau of EMS Matching Grant established this water safety campaign to help parents throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond. Please visit the helpful links page for a list our Safe Kids Water Safety Campaign Partners.

Join us by sharing this information with parents you know, and by following our safety tips for your backyard pool.

Let's work toward zero drownings in Tampa Bay and around Florida!
