The City of Tarpon Springs would like your feedback on the Dodecanese Boulevard/Athens St. Stormwater and Roadway Improvements Project
The Project
As part of the City's Stormwater Action Plan (SAP), the Public Works Department has partnered with the State of Florida on a stormwater flood protection and water quality improvement project.
- Installing a new stormwater collection system (pipes) along Athens Street from Cross Street to Dodecanese Boulevard and along Dodecanese Boulevard from just west of Athens Street to just west of Arfaras Street.
- Construction of a new stormwater pump station located near the Dodecanese/Athens intersection
- The new stormwater collection system and stormwater pump station will reduce the historic and frequent flooding at the following locations: Dodecanese/Athens intersection, and Athens Street from Dodecanese Boulevard to just north of Cross Street.
- Construction of a new trash and sediment separation box within the stormwater pump station will remove trash and debris to protect the Anclote River
- Estimated Construction Schedule: Start Spring/Summer 2023, Duration 6 to 8 months. The construction schedule will be timed to minimize significant impact to peak tourist season.
- All proposed work will occur within the City of Tarpon Springs Right-of-Way for Dodecanese Boulevard and Athens Street.
- All access to businesses will be maintained throughout the life of the construction phase, but inconveniences and delays are to be expected with a major construction project.
- Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on both sides of the roadway, with some exceptions during the removal/installation of storm inlets and possible utility relocations.
- For proposed work along Athens Street, the City will develop roadway closures and appropriate detours.
Background
Historically, Dodecanese Boulevard from Athens Street to Arfaras Street has flooded during nominal storm events. The flooding is normally within the roadway but during significant storm events or storm events that occur near a high tide within the Anclote River, private property has been affected.
