Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant
The City of Tarpon Springs has operated its Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWWTP) since 1984, with significant upgrades implemented in 1999 and 2009. The facility utilizes a highly effective 5-stage Bardenpho process to remove and recover excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, ensuring its operations are continually optimized through state-of-the-art monitoring systems and a robust water quality assurance protocol. This superior process ensures recovered resources are recycled into agricultural fertilizer, and approximately 80% of the clean, treated water is directed into the City's reclaimed water supply.
What Our Facility Provides
- Sustainable water source through the production of high-quality reclaimed water
- Environmental protection by removing excess nutrients that would otherwise pollute waterways
- Sustainable resource recovery by converting recovered nutrients into agricultural fertilizer
- High-quality reclaimed and effluent water through advanced monitoring systems

Frequently Asked Questions
Only wastewater and toilet paper should be discharged down your drains.
Foods, chemicals, paints, fats, oil, grease products may be eligible for recycling programs at local disposal sites.
Unused or expired medications can be properly disposed of at your local pharmacy or fire department.
Personal "flushable" wipes must be disposed of in solid waste receptacles to prevent clogs and blockages of pipes and pumps downstream, potentially creating sewer overflows to the environment.
Intentional introduction of any stormwater into the sewer system is strictly prohibited by sewer use ordinances.
"Pee Traps" are configured into plumbing arrangements to hold a column of water to prevent sewer gases from emitting out of sewer drains. If this water column dries out from minimal or no use, the issue can typically be resolved by running a small amount of water down the drain to refill the water column which creates the barrier.
First, ensure that sewer service is provided by the City, and determine if the backup is an isolated issue to one fixture or basin or if the issue is throughout the entire dwelling.
If the problem is isolated to one fixture, the owner or resident should call the City's Water Conveyance Department to report a water outage, leak, or sewer backup, and then the resident will need to contact a plumber.
The City of Tarpon Springs cannot reimburse residents for plumbing bills when a plumber is called out first.
